We are so close to 2015 that we can basically taste it. With new years come new years resolutions, and one of the most common resolutions is to ‘lose weight’ and to ‘get healthy’. One pattern I have seen at my gym is the influx of people in January where you basically have to wait in line to use any equipment. However, come April the majority of these people stop coming. Excuses range from no time to discouragement from not seeing any results. There are so many different ways that you can be active and finding the right fitness avenue is half the battle. When you find something that you enjoy there will be no room for excuses. So let’s talk about some options that are out there.
Big Box Gyms
These include Goodlife, LA fitness, and World Gym. These gyms are great because they will have all the equipment that you will need (whether you use it or not), they include many different classes, and you can get personal training to help you on your new fitness path. If you are looking for a one stop shop this is a great option for fitness. They usually offer cardio, zumba, and yoga classes so there is plenty of variety. These gyms are usually not terribly expensive, but in order to make the investment worth it you do need to go at least 3 times a week.
I have both a gym and yoga studio membership. This can be a bit pricy, but I love the energy of a yoga studio. Yes, yoga studios are expensive. The ones I have seen in Toronto are usually around $100 a month, so unless you really love yoga it can be a bit of a stretch. Yoga studios offer different types of yoga and they incorporate more of the Eastern yoga culture. Quiet classes, meditation, and zen environments are what keeps me going back.
Martial arts gyms offer classes for every level. If you are looking for a fun, challenging workout that never gets boring, this is the place to be. You get fit and learn some essential skills. These gyms usually have some weights and other fitness equipment, but they mostly focus on classes. However, a couple problems with these gyms are they are harder to find in all neighbourhoods and they can also be a bit expensive.
At Home Videos
We have all heard of P90X, Insanity, Tae Bo, and the countless other at home fitness routines. The best part of these workouts is that they are cheap and you can do them in the comfort of your own home. The one thing that you do need though, is self motivation because it can get easy to skip these workouts. If you feel like you have no time to get to a gym or it’s too expensive then you should consider one of these. What’s great is that there are so many types of videos. Many of these programs progress quite well and you can do them for many months.
If you are looking for something different this is a great time to try new things. There are so many new types of classes popping up that getting fit can be so much fun. Some of these are pole dancing, barre, Pilates, and Crossfit. They are all so different, so it’s easy to find something you enjoy.
Your options are endless, and most of these places offer free classes so you can try a few different activities before you find your interest. Getting fit and healthy doesn’t have to be complicated. It just requires self discipline and a little time to find something that you enjoy doing. It takes 3 weeks to make something a habit, so find something you love and stick with it, and before you know it it will be something you can never go without.
Have a Happy New Year!
